MIKE GILMORE
Managing Director , e-Ready Buillding


Mike Gilmore, Managing Director of e-Ready Building Limited, is involved in standardization of the design, implementation and operation of telecommunications facilities and infrastructures in the UK, in Europe and at international level: an activity which draws together LAN/WAN developments, cabling design and installation practice together with EMC and energy management issues.

Mike Gilmore began his telecommunications career with STC Defence Systems as Project Manager with the Fibre Optic Division in Leeds, West Yorkshire where he was involved in the specification of complete systems covering the commercial and military applications for optical fibre within video and data transmission.

In 1986, Mike founded Optical Core Technology Limited - one of the first specialist installers of optical fibre infrastructures. In 1991, Mike formed The Cabling Partnership which evolved into e-Ready Building Limited in 2004. These changes widened the organisation's technological scope and enabled the company to provide a more diverse range of services to its clients.

He has a voluntary role as Director of Standards of the Fibreoptic Industry Association, In addition he chairs the audit and arbitration committees for the FIA. As Director of STANDARDS@fia, Mike is responsible for all the representation of the organisation within standards bodies. This allows members views to be promoted in many areas - far beyond fibre optic technologies.

Mike is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences in all five continents. He has provided the keynote address and opening presentation in many conferences in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. His seminars, providing regular updates on the progression of cabling standards are particularly well attended and are operating in the UK and continental Europe.

In 1988, Mike initiated the British Standards activity to create a Code of Practice for the Installation of Fibre Optic Cabling. Published by the UK Fibreoptic Industry Association in 1991 and by BSI in 1994 (as BS 7718) this document was a world leading text for the design and quality assurance of optical networks.


In the UK, Mike is a past-Chairman of TCT/7, the BSI Technical Committee addressing "telecommunications installation requirements" and continues to serve as FIA nominee on this committee which is responsible for the publication in the UK of both European norms and UK national standards including:
BS 6701;
BS 8492.

At the European level Mike is Chairman of CENELEC TC215 "Electrotechnical Aspects of Telecommunication Equipment" which is responsible for the development of an integrated series of standards for the design and installation of telecommunications cabling in a range of premises including, but not restricted to, offices, industrial, homes and data centres.

Mike is also Convenor of TC215 Working Group 1 (cabling design) and Secretary of Working Group 2 (cabling installation) and is responsible for the following European norms:
EN 50173-1, EN 50173-2, EN 50173-3,
EN 50173-4, EN 50173-5 and EN 50173-6;
CLC TR 50173-99-1,CLC TR 50173-99-2 and
CLC TR 50173-99-3;
EN 50174-1, EN 50174-2 and EN 50174-3
CLC TR 50174-99-1
EN 50310;
EN 50677;
EN 50700.

He also represents CLC TC215 on the CLC/ETSI Installations and Cabling Coordination Group (ICCG).

At international level, Mike has been Convenor of both the Industrial Premises Task Group (responsible for ISO/IEC 24702) and the Cabling Implementation Task Group (CITG) within ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3. The latter, established in February 2006, was responsible for the strategic management of the international standards covering the specification, quality assurance, installation, administration, operation, maintenance and repair of generic cabling (i.e. ISO/IEC 14763-2 and ISO/IEC TR 14763-2-1). This work supports all the cabling design standards produced by ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3 - equivalent to the EN 50173 series in CENELEC.

More recently, Mike has been involved in two ad-hoc groups of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3 - one to create ISO/IEC 30129 (now published as BS EN 50310:2016) for the "bonding of telecommunications networks" and ISO/IEC 18598 (BS EN 50667) for "automated infrastructure management".

In 2008 Mike was appointed leader of a ETSI Specialist Task Force 362 for energy efficiency in broadband deployment with specific focus on data centres. This work was completed with the publication of the ETSI TS 105174 series documents. This work was continued when he was appointed leader of a second ETSI STF (439) covering operational Key Performance Indicators for energy management in broadband deployment.

This work concentrated on energy management within data centres which has contributed to other activity detailed below. ETSI standards are published free-of-charge and relevant links are included below:

ETSI ES 205200-2-1.

The work of CENELEC TC215 WG3, closely associated with the above work, is to produce the EN 50600 series of standards focussed on data centre facility and infrastructure design. Mike is a UK expert within that group.

Data centre standardization is also underway at international level within ISO/IEC JTC1 SC39 WG1 - addressing energy management Key Performance Indicators. Mike is a member of the UK (BSI IST/46) and the international committees in this area.

Mike represents CLC within the European Standards Organisations co-ordination group on Green Data Centres which links the work of ETSI and CENELEC.

Most recently, Mike was appointed leader of a ETSI Specialist Task Force 516 to produce 13 separate ETSI EN documents addressing energy management issues in a variety of broadband deployment sectors.

In 1991, Mike published "Fibre optic cabling; theory design and installation practice" published in 1991 (and recently revised with Barry Elliott) remains a reference for both experts and entrants into this field.

In 2012, Mike worked with Mani Manivannan of Arup Communications to produce "Telecommunications cabling: Guidance on standards and best practice for construction projects"

Mike Gilmore is Director of STANDARDS@fia and holds a number of key roles within UK, European and international standards bodies addressing the design, installation and energy management of telecommunications facilities and infrastructures. All the services provided by e-Ready Building are founded on direct involvement in this standardisation via both the formal standards bodies (BSI, CENELEC, ETSI and ISO/IEC).
SEMINARS AND TRAINING


e-Ready Building develops and delivers a range of "education" services including both seminars and training courses.

Our open-access seminars focus on latest technical- or standards-based developments in the telecommunications infrastructure market covering all aspects of information technology cabling
design;
installation;
commissioning (inspection and testing);
operation and administration.

Customer-specific training is created "on demand" to address particular aspects of infrastructure implementation.


Restrictions of service
Although e-Ready Building provides a wide range of supply-side services - there are restrictions. We cannot represent individual organisations as part of the standards development activity that we undertake. To do do would compromise the impartiality that that has to be maintained when operating as chair/convenor of standards committees or task groups. Our reputation for complete independence is vital in this area.
