As the Technical and Standards Director of the UK Fibreoptic Industry Association, Mike is heavily involved in the development of training and competence standards for the fibre installation industry and sets down policy in this area. In addition he chairs the audit and arbitration committees for the FIA. In 2007, he extended the role of the FIA by initiating the UK TIA-B (Telecommunications Infrastructure Advisory Board) to provide interpretation and advice relating to standards covering all cabling technologies.

In the UK, Mike is a past-Chairman of TCT/7, the BSI Technical Committee responsible for the three UK BSI Experts Panels on telecommunications cabling.

He also chairs one of the Expert Panels TCT/7/-/1 which acts to assist development of European and international standards for telecommunications cabling design. He acts as Meeting Secretary for the two other panels TCT/7/-/2 and TCT/7/-/3.

TCT/7/-/2 addresses the development of European and international standards for planning and installation standards for telecommunications cabling This panel also manages the implementation of European standards and others in the UK and is responsible for the production and ongoing maintenance of BS 6701 and BS 8492.

TCT/7/-/3 support the work of CENELEC TC215 WG3 in developing the EN 50600 series of standards for data centre facilities and infrastructures.

At the European level Mike is primarily involved in CENELEC TC215 - as Convenor of Working Group 1 and Secretary of Working Group 2. TC215 is responsible for the development of an integrated series of standards for the design and installation of telecommunications cabling in a range of premises including, but not restricted to, offices, industrial, homes and data centres. In 2008 he was appointed leader of a ETSI Specialist Task Force 362 for energy efficiency in broadband deployment with specific focus on data centres. This work was completed with the publication of the ETSI TS 105174 series documents, allowing Mike to assist in a new TC215 WG3 activity covering data centre facilities and infrastructures. In 2012, Mike was appointed leader of a further ETSI STF 439 covering operational key performance indicators for energy efficiency in broadband deployment (again with focus on data centres, fixed and mobile access networks).

At international level, Mike is Convenor of both the Industrial Premises Task Group (responsible for ISO/IEC 24702) and the Cabling Implementation Task Group (CITG) within ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3. The latter, established in February 2006, is responsible for the strategic management of the international standards covering the specification, quality assurance, installation, administration, operation, maintenance and repair of generic cabling (i.e. ISO/IEC 14763-2 and ISO/IEC TR 14763-2-1). This work supports all the cabling design standards produced by ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3 - equivalent to the EN 50173 series in CENELEC.

Mike is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences in all five continents. He has provided the keynote address and opening presentation in many conferences in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. His seminars, providing regular updates on the progression of cabling standards are particularly well attended and are operating in the UK and continental Europe.
